Emily and Tom: engaged

Emily and Tom live in Davenport, Iowa presently – where Tom is attending chiropractic school. Since they live such a long way away (I’ve driven up there before – it’s a bit of a hike!), we had to plan their engagement session WAY in advance. Emily was nervous about the weather, and understandably so – we’ve had measureable snowfall by now some years – and watching the news last night, the meteorologist pointed out the record low was ONE DEGREE. One. single. degree. Emily emailed me a couple of weeks beforehand, and asked if we might be able to go the weekend before if the weather looked iffy for the Saturday we had scheduled.

No need. Last Saturday – our originally scheduled Saturday – was the most gorgeous day EV-ER. I mean, photographers don’t dream of sheep leaping fences. We dream of days like this. Emily and Tom brought along Maddie, their dog, to be a part of the shoot. We wandered the quiet, early-morning streets of the Country Club Plaza, then found some quiet alleys and facades in the Crossroads District. Here’s a sample of what we happened upon. Guys, I can’t wait for your wedding next year!!

Just a quick note to say that Sarah Dickerson Photography is now a proud member of WPPI. The Wedding and Portrait Photographers International is an organization designed to further the education of wedding and portrait photographers as well as promote the industry in general. They have INCREDIBLE seminars to help us photographers stay up to date on technique and the business in general, and to keep our ideas and creativity fresh! I hope to attend the WPPI convention in Las Vegas next March and up my game another notch for 2010!

I’m always happy to have the opportunity to meet and network with other photographers and expand my knowledge base and creative skills, and think WPPI is going to be just the ticket for this!

As most of you know, I’ve been getting some much needed r+r this month, and as such among other trips took a week-long cruise, during which time I didn’t have cell coverage. As stated here on the blog as well, I left a voicemail greeting giving the dates of my absence and that I’d be back in touch (and stateside!) on the 16th. I’m of course back and right back into super crazy times filling everyone’s orders and booking 2010 weddings…and forgot to change my voicemail greeting back. It is now up to date – but if you called me after the 16th and got this greeting, my apologies for overlooking the fact that it was erroneous!!

We’re good to go now 🙂 I’m back and have been back – just a little remiss in updating my phone! A reminder that I can always, in addition to my phone at 816.665.9394, be reached via email at sdickersonphoto@gmail.com. I return all calls and emails within 24 hours, unless I am on-site at an extended shoot (such as a multiple-day horse show), in which case I’ll get back to you at my first opportunity. And, you can check on this very thing on the calendar on my main site – I keep all shoots and my personal vacations listed here!

Happy autumn, everyone! 🙂

Jennifer and Aeijolt fan Walta

October 21st, 2009

Ok, I won’t expect you all to try to say (or even THINK about saying) “Aeijolt fan Walta”, so we’ll call Jennifer’s Friesian gelding by his barn name, Magic. I met Jennifer and Magic at Pine Hill Farm on a very chilly but gorgeously sunny morning last Sunday. As I’ve boarded at Pine Hill, I […]

I met Jennifer and Magic at Pine Hill Farm on a very chilly but gorgeously sunny morning last Sunday. As I’ve boarded at Pine Hill, I have had ample opportunity to scope out the place from a photographic standpoint – and the pastures are gorgeous, with widely scattered, tall trees and rolling hills. We worked the morning light for all it’s worth. There are at LEAST 100 more shots that are just as cool as these.

Up next is Malorie and Matt’s engagement images – some great stuff from that shoot, later the same day as this shoot. The light was just as incredible.

Until then…here you go!

Pfalzgraf and Degas

This is the most emotional shoot I’ve ever done, and therefore the most emotional blog post as well. Pfalzgraf and Degas were photographed for their owner as a rememberance as they were both laid to rest last week. Both had rapidly deteriorating health conditions that caused their vet to recommend that they not go through the winter. They both had full, long lives; Pfalzgraf was a 33 year old imported warmblood gelding and Degas a 27 year old Arabian gelding. Both were loved for a very, very long time by their owner Betsy – who wanted one last shoot by which to remember them.

We scheduled the shoot for last Saturday before I was due to go out of town on vacation; time was short for both geldings and we had days of cloudy weather forecast after Saturday morning – plus I’d be out of town all week. I found it beyond amazing that we had maybe one hour of sunlight all day Saturday – a cold, blustery day – and that hour was while we were shooting early in the morning. It was cloudy on my drive to their farm and as soon as we put them back in their paddock, it clouded over once again.

Thanks to the powers that be to give us sunlight for this shoot. I often feel my chosen passion pales in comparison to what some do for a living – but I could not help but realize how incredibly important my job was this day. To create something extraordinary by which Pfalzgraf and Degas could be remembered.

Godspeed.

I’m signing off the blog for the next week/week and a half as I leave for a CRUISE!! So freaking excited! I’ll be back with even more shoots when I get back in town – in the meantime, I’m doing one last massive editing push to get as many of your shoots onto the proofing site as possible before I leave – and for those placing print orders – I’ll fulfill those through the weekend, then after that they will have to wait until I return next Friday…same with CD/DVD orders – if I get it today – I can get it out – otherwise it won’t go until the next mail day after I return which will be next Saturday. Thanks for your understanding – I need a vacation!! 🙂

So…not to steal Whitney’s thunder…here she is!
