LOTS and LOTS of stuff going on at SDP – this is the busiest winter in our history! Usually portrait and wedding photographers see a distinct “slow season” during the winter months – perhaps it’s due in part to our super warm weather, as I’ve had a lot more portrait sessions this winter than usual. I’ve DEFINITELY had more weddings! :) But, to cut to the chase, there’s lots to update so here’s the scoop, in order of importance! (and on a very brief note before we get started – I’ve been sick on and off for going on 3 weeks now – the winter crud that refuses to leave  - so at times I’ve lagged on emails and especially phone calls when I had the worst of my searing sore throat. Please be patient with me – the good news is, I’m starting to turn the corner with the load of prescriptions I was handed yesterday!)

1. STUDIO CLOSURE FOR VACATION: This is an important one – my husband Jim and I will be taking a MUCH needed vacation and will be out of the country from March 4th through March 11th. I have a wedding on Saturday, March 3rd – so, I will not be reachable via phone from the evening of Friday, March 2nd until Monday, March 12th. My phone will not be on during the time I am out of the country (um, cha-ching!). Please, during this time, email me instead at sarah@sarahdickersonphoto.com. I will be checking emails and responding – but be patient, as this is vacation ;) I will not be checking daily and it may take me a bit to get back with you!

2. PORTRAIT SCHEDULE: Winter is waning! Which means my weekend availability for portrait sessions goes from plentiful to nearly nil. A reminder that the studio is open 6 days per week, I am closed (and take my single day off) on Sundays so that I can spend time with my family and wonderfully tolerant husband :) . If you want a Saturday spot, my last available session slots for quite some time occur on Saturday, March 17th, as wedding season kicks into high gear starting March 24th. Otherwise, we are getting daylight savings back at that time and I can easily accommodate you on a weekday evening (during the best light of the day)! I am booked full until after my return from vacation, so I am now accepting sessions beginning the week of Monday, March 12th.

3. WEDDING SCHEDULE: 2012 filled beyond my WILDEST dreams! I am accepting only two more weddings for 2012, then will close the books on the year and look ahead to 2013 – and I’m starting to book for 2013 with a handful already on the books! I’m so excited for this wedding season and all of the AWESOME COUPLES I get to work with! My best advice for those considering booking: get on the books for a consultation sooner rather than later if you have a peak season date. I could not believe how quickly 2012 filled!

4. BOUDOIR MARATHON: The February 11th boudoir marathon with CaraSue Hall of Dalla Cima Salon (located right across the hall from my studio!) was a success and is already behind us, and I’ve been shooting a lot of private boudoir sessions as well! The next (and last, until late in the year) marathon is set for Saturday, March 31st. There are only a couple of slots left so if you want one, snag it up! I’ll continue to offer full private sessions at the studio as well as mini sessions (Mondays only) and boudoir parties (for groups of 3 or more) throughout the year. For more information on my boudoir work, visit the boudoir guide here. The studio is a wonderfully vintage, elegant setting for these sessions and I’m so excited to have such a great place to shoot boudoir now!

5. FAMILY MINI SESSION DAYS: I’m offering one, *possibly* two family mini session days on a select Sunday or two this spring. These will be held in Liberty (starting out at the studio and venturing around the quaint square). I’ll have dates set before I leave for vacation. There will only be a limited amount of sessions offered – so if you want a coveted weekend slot, look for those dates (announced here and on my Facebook page). Remember, I’m otherwise closed on Sundays! :)

6. AND FINALLY…A CONTEST! This is a different one, though, not one you have to enter! I will be shooting my 100th wedding this spring! (that’s a LOT of weddings, folks!) The lucky 100th couple to be in front of my lens on their wedding day will win a VERY special prize. The fun part? I already know who it is! Stay tuned for this one :)

That’s it for the updates! I hope to soon move to a newsletter format to keep clients abreast of happenings at SDP, but in the meantime, I’ll continue to keep you posted right here on the blog! All weddings and sessions shot as of today’s date will be fully edited and delivered to clients prior to my vacation. I have two album drafts left to deliver out of my HUGE list this winter – and those will be in clients’ hands by the end of this Sunday! Because a blog post from a photographer is worthless without a photo, here’s another gem from Meghan and Scott’s engagement session last week!

Meghan + Scott | a warm and cozy Liberty Missouri engagement session

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! Well, the title of this post might be a bit too positive. Meghan and Scott met me at my studio in Liberty, Missouri last Friday for their engagement session. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! Well, the title of this post might be a bit too positive. :) Meghan and Scott met me at my studio in Liberty, Missouri last Friday for their engagement session. Those of you who live in the Kansas City area probably know how frigid last Friday was. If you don’t, well let me remind you: it was frigid. We kicked off the session around the downtown square (right out the front door of my studio!) – it was cold but at least the buildings, at times, helped block the wind. Then, after a quick change of clothes at the studio, we walked the short half block to the JEM for some fun shots in this wonderful bar. If you haven’t been to the JEM, you are missing out (I’m headed there Friday, in fact, to see Mary Bridget Davies!) I digress though – we ordered a round of drinks, shot around the place a bit – long enough to thaw out! The waitstaff was wonderfully accommodating (so thank you guys!!) – and I even overheard the handful of other late-afternoon patrons comment on how adorable these two were. :) We left just as the mad Friday happy  hour rush started filing in – back to the studio to change and off to nearby Stocksdale Park to, well, freeze. There was NOTHING blocking that wind, folks. My car’s thermometer read 19 degrees and when we finished, my phone said the windchill was -1. MAD PROPS to these two for sticking it out for some incredible sunset shots.

Why did we shoot in this weather you say? Well, their originally scheduled date was rained out, and these two were moving to Colorado for school for the next few months the very next morning! I’m glad they stuck it out and I’m glad we sought refuge in the JEM as I love how candid and fun and DIFFERENT the session turned out. (and to those of you still planning your engagement sessions: there are a LOT of different and fun/unique ideas for sessions – and neat locations that are off the beaten path and usual list of popular engagement spots…be different! ;) ) You’ll see these two back on the blog in September when they get married!

We shot around the studio a bit as well as around the front deck of my building, cute furniture and all – and a bit around the building as well. This little guy did SO well! He LOVED my window and watching the cars go by down below :) Happy Birthday little guy!

Jessica + Nat | Shawnee Mission Park engagement session

February 9th, 2012

Jessica and Nat had a cloudy but 65 DEGREE DAY for their engagement session last week. With light winds. And a sick photographer (I made it though!) And the sun came out JUST IN TIME for sunset! I can never run out of ideas at Shawnee Mission Park, seriously, it’s one of my favorite places [...]

I can never run out of ideas at Shawnee Mission Park, seriously, it’s one of my favorite places to shoot. And Jessica and Nat? How sweet are these two? You will see them again right here before you know it – because their wedding will also be here before you know it, in mid-May! :)

Kelly + Jordan | Sunset at Shawnee Mission engagement

February 3rd, 2012

I was super excited to get out and shoot Kelly and Jordan’s engagement session last week. I was super excited to get out and shoot Kelly and Jordan’s engagement session last week. Let’s face it, there isn’t as much opportunity to photograph during the winter months – and the weather has been so gorgeous. I’m very thankful for the weather that has allowed a bit busier of a winter schedule than usual! Me? I LOVE shooting during the winter. The light is just…different (in a very good way). I love the golden and beige hues of the landscape. I don’t mind that the trees are bare at all. Jordan and Kelly’s session at Shawnee Mission Park was no exception to the wonderful opportunities that winter presents – Kelly lives in the eastern US and was only in town for a few days – so we had a narrow window in which to shoot their engagement session. It worked out in a wonderful way with a near 60 degree day and a gorgeous winter sunset. I really enjoyed working with these two and they were so easy to photograph. They truly had a lot of fun and I love it when a session not only serves to document an important time in life but is an enjoyable experience in the process!

Shayna + Adam | Heritage Hall Topeka wedding

February 1st, 2012

Shayna and Adam were yet again another fantastic winter wedding – during this “anti-winter” we seem to be having. Shayna and Adam were yet again another fantastic winter wedding – during this “anti-winter” we seem to be having. It was quite windy last Saturday in Topeka, Kansas, but still near 50 degrees – a far cry from Adam’s cousin, Megan’s, wedding from almost exactly a year ago, again in Topeka, with over a foot of snow on the ground! Lyn Scardina again did a wonderful job as planner, and Most Pure Heart of Mary was the location for the ceremony and Heritage Hall at the Kansas Expocenter hosted the reception. Such a sweet wedding party (and bride and groom) – 2nd shooter Mike Tsai and I truly had a lot of fun with these guys!

I’ll get right to the photos (just TRY and resist flower girl Amaya’s cuteness!) – because I’m running way behind on getting this one blogged (have been down with a super nasty cold the past two days) and bed is calling for this sick girl to come inhabit it!

The Lanes met me at the studio last week for a “hybrid” newborn session with new son Harrison as well as a family session. We even ventured outside the studio a bit given the strange 64-degree weather! Although I worry about how dry and unseasonably warm it is right now and what that spells for spring, crops, and all of that, I must say I’m not complaining at the increase in off-season shooting due to the weather!

Here’s a sneak peek at this wonderful family.

SDP and CaraSue Hall of Dalla Cima Salon are once again joining forces for two winter boudoir marathons! The first will be Saturday, February 11th and the second will be Saturday, March 31st. Slots are available as early as 9am and as late as 4pm. Ladies will spend the first half of the session (plan to spend two hours with us!) with CaraSue having professional hair and makeup done, then the second half with me creating some super sexy images for the loved one in your life! These sessions are UNFORGETTABLE gifts for your fiancé, husband or boyfriend.

We’ve already booked a few sessions for each date but we have plenty of room for YOU! Please
email me for available times and a contract to book your spot. You’ll receive a disc of edited images from the session, or for a small up-charge, you can swap the disc for a 6×6 album. These are SUPER fun sessions and CaraSue and I are only able to offer 2 to 3 of these per year due to our wedding schedules, so be sure to take advantage now! I’m so excited to now have my studio in which to shoot boudoir, the vintage vibe and cool old furniture is just perfect for these sessions. And with CaraSue’s Dalla Cima Salon located RIGHT ACROSS THE HALLWAY (same building!), well, how can you go wrong?

Hope to see you in February or March! (if those dates don’t work for you, I offer private sessions including mini sessions every Monday! see my full boudoir guide here!)
