Happy Thanksgiving! Some sneak peeks and a SALE!

November 21st, 2012

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving! I’m leaving on a jet plane at the crack of dawn tomorrow, headed over the hill and through the woods to (almost) gradmother’s house. Actually my 93 year old great-aunt; my grandmother’s sister. My grandmother passed in 2005 and she and my great-aunt were seriously best of friends their whole lives. Therefore […]

Therefore my great-aunt visited KC often and we visited her in Louisville, Kentucky often. She is a third grandmother to me. I am THANKFUL she has lived such a long and healthy life and THANKFUL to be headed to Kentucky tomorrow for a few days with her and all of my other family that lives in Louisville. Her father died just shy of his 104th birthday; she is so healthy we all think she is aiming to beat him out! ๐Ÿ™‚

Before I go to the Bluegrass State, I wanted to give everyone some sneak peeks that have been posted on my Facebook page – these are all sessions that will be blogged after the holiday weekend, all shot in the past week or so. Family sessions, senior sessions, engagement sessions, I still am very busy!

After these sneak peek images is a repeat post of my SALE flyer! The SDP 4th Annual Holiday Sale starts Friday, THIS Friday! Go shopping all you want and get 25% off EVERYTHING in my online galleries Friday through December 7th! All you need to do is enter the code SDPHolidaySale2012 at checkout. All you shoppers out there, take note! SDP is about to launch our ever-popular Holiday Sale, version 4.0. Those of you who have wanted to order prints but have held off? Now is your time. Those of you who wanted a canvas but were waiting for the sale to get a good deal? You’re good […]

All you shoppers out there, take note! SDP is about to launch our ever-popular Holiday Sale, version 4.0. Those of you who have wanted to order prints but have held off? Now is your time. Those of you who wanted a canvas but were waiting for the sale to get a good deal? You’re good to go. This is a GREAT time to order prints for Christmas gifts, order electronic files for Christmas cards, or order that piece of gorgeous wall art that you have always wanted.

Here’s the scoop. All galleries are eligible (even those events and shoots from 2010 that are still posted!) and everyone who was a 2012 client of SDP will also receive an email notification. Of course, pass the information along to friends or family who may like to shop as well! The sale runs from November 23rd (Black Friday) through December 7th – or two weeks. Everything ordered by sale’s end is guaranteed for Christmas delivery, HOWever, if you are ordering in the last few days of the sale I strongly suggest upgrading to the Priority Mail shipping option.

All items that can be ordered online – prints, canvases, electronic files, gift items – they are ALL 25% off. Just enter the code SDPHolidaySale2012 at checkout starting at midnight on Friday November 23rd (meaning midnight right after Thanksgiving dinner is finished!) and you will be credited with the discount at checkout.

Just a reminder – this is posted at the top of the blog, but I am booked full until after Thanksgiving as far as portrait sessions go – I have limited weekend availability remaining in December, but it is going very quickly so act fast if you want to get in! I’ve got lots of availability coming up in January and February. Winter is a GREAT time to shoot – as a wedding photographer, it’s the best time to schedule me if you need a weekend session slot! I often can’t book weekend portraits during the warm weather months due to my wedding schedule.

Happy Shopping!

Fall is upon us (shortly) – more studio updates!

August 8th, 2012

With fall comes the busiest time of the year for portrait sessions. It also brings the second wave of “busy season” for those of us who do weddings. I’ve taken most of the work that comes my way the past two years – up until I couldn’t schedule any more. With this workload has come […]

With fall comes the busiest time of the year for portrait sessions. It also brings the second wave of “busy season” for those of us who do weddings. I’ve taken most of the work that comes my way the past two years – up until I couldn’t schedule any more. With this workload has come 14 hour days, 6 days a week (the 7th being Saturday, which is wedding day and I’m shooting all day!), phone calls and emails at all hours, missed family events, missed time with friends, and a lot of stress. I truly love every minute of what I do and I love my clients equally as much. I’m blessed that my business is so successful and I have so many wonderful clients who support it! But alas, the time has come to cut back and repay those who are near and dear to me (friends, family and my husband) who have sacrificed so much as I’ve started up this business!

We’re headed into fall and I have 14 weddings on the books between now and the middle of November! I will be limiting the number of fall sessions I take so I can keep up with the incredible amount of editing that comes with wedding work. Right now, I have availability for four sessions in September and three in October, beyond what is already booked. Please note that these are for full portrait sessions, I won’t be accepting any mini sessions during that time (unless you already have one booked with me). ย I will be offering a day of mini sessions on a Sunday in mid-November after weddings slow, so stay tuned!ย Also please note that I have NO weekend availability during this time due to my wedding schedule. I have weekday morning and evening times available for these available slots. If you want to know how many sessions I still have available, please check the status at the top of this page (in the turquoise text); I’ll do my best to keep it up to date. If you need a weekend slot, I would be happy to refer you to a photographer who specializes in portrait work and can take you on!

I have new portrait pricing that will be taking effect on August 15th. Sessions will continue to book at current rates until that time.

I will be cutting back on the amount of weddings I accept in 2013, and I’m booking fast! The first half of the year is pretty much booked full at this point, with openings still existing in the fall of 2013 and into the holidays. If you have been thinking of inquiring but holding off, shoot me an email before I am full! I can’t believe how quickly the season has filled.

In addition to my concentration on weddings in 2013 I will be shortly launching a new offshoot of my studio, SDP Boudoir. I’ve been offering boudoir sessions for a while now, but have decided to separate the offering from my main studio site and tailor some packages and offerings to suit brides to be as well as ladies who want an unforgettable gift for their husband, fiance or boyfriend. Stay tuned for a link to the new site once it goes live!

Since I believe that NO blog post should go without an image, here’s one from Ashley and Kris’ wedding, of stunning bride Ashley – their blog highlights will be up tomorrow!

Some long overdue studio updates

February 15th, 2012

LOTS and LOTS of stuff going on at SDP – this is the busiest winter in our history! LOTS and LOTS of stuff going on at SDP – this is the busiest winter in our history! Usually portrait and wedding photographers see a distinct “slow season” during the winter months – perhaps it’s due in part to our super warm weather, as I’ve had a lot more portrait sessions this winter than usual. I’ve DEFINITELY had more weddings! ๐Ÿ™‚ But, to cut to the chase, there’s lots to update so here’s the scoop, in order of importance! (and on a very brief note before we get started – I’ve been sick on and off for going on 3 weeks now – the winter crud that refuses to leave ย – so at times I’ve lagged on emails and especially phone calls when I had the worst of my searing sore throat. Please be patient with me – the good news is, I’m starting to turn the corner with the load of prescriptions I was handed yesterday!)

1. STUDIO CLOSURE FOR VACATION: This is an important one – my husband Jim and I will be taking a MUCH needed vacation and will be out of the country from March 4th through March 11th. I have a wedding on Saturday, March 3rd – so, I will not be reachable via phone from the evening of Friday, March 2nd until Monday, March 12th. My phone will not be on during the time I am out of the country (um, cha-ching!). Please, during this time, email me instead at sarah@sarahdickersonphoto.com. I will be checking emails and responding – but be patient, as this is vacation ๐Ÿ˜‰ I will not be checking daily and it may take me a bit to get back with you!

2. PORTRAIT SCHEDULE: Winter is waning! Which means my weekend availability for portrait sessions goes from plentiful to nearly nil. A reminder that the studio is open 6 days per week, I am closed (and take my single day off) on Sundays so that I can spend time with my family and wonderfully tolerant husband :). If you want a Saturday spot, my last available session slots for quite some time occur on Saturday, March 17th, as wedding season kicks into high gear starting March 24th. Otherwise, we are getting daylight savings back at that time and I can easily accommodate you on a weekday evening (during the best light of the day)! I am booked full until after my return from vacation, so I am now accepting sessions beginning the week of Monday, March 12th.

3. WEDDING SCHEDULE: 2012 filled beyond my WILDEST dreams! I am accepting only two more weddings for 2012, then will close the books on the year and look ahead to 2013 – and I’m starting to book for 2013 with a handful already on the books! I’m so excited for this wedding season and all of the AWESOME COUPLES I get to work with! My best advice for those considering booking: get on the books for a consultation sooner rather than later if you have a peak season date. I could not believe how quickly 2012 filled!

4. BOUDOIR MARATHON: The February 11th boudoir marathon with CaraSue Hall of Dalla Cima Salon (located right across the hall from my studio!) was a success and is already behind us, and I’ve been shooting a lot of private boudoir sessions as well! The next (and last, until late in the year) marathon is set for Saturday, March 31st. There are only a couple of slots left so if you want one, snag it up! I’ll continue to offer full private sessions at the studio as well as mini sessions (Mondays only) and boudoir parties (for groups of 3 or more) throughout the year. For more information on my boudoir work, visit the boudoir guide here. The studio is a wonderfully vintage, elegant setting for these sessions and I’m so excited to have such a great place to shoot boudoir now!

5. FAMILY MINI SESSION DAYS: I’m offering one, *possibly* two family mini session days on a select Sunday or two this spring. These will be held in Liberty (starting out at the studio and venturing around the quaint square). I’ll have dates set before I leave for vacation. There will only be a limited amount of sessions offered – so if you want a coveted weekend slot, look for those dates (announced here and on my Facebook page). Remember, I’m otherwise closed on Sundays! ๐Ÿ™‚

6. AND FINALLY…A CONTEST! This is a different one, though, not one you have to enter! I will be shooting my 100th wedding this spring! (that’s a LOT of weddings, folks!) The lucky 100th couple to be in front of my lens on their wedding day will win a VERY special prize. The fun part? I already know who it is! Stay tuned for this one ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s it for the updates! I hope to soon move to a newsletter format to keep clients abreast of happenings at SDP, but in the meantime, I’ll continue to keep you posted right here on the blog! All weddings and sessions shot as of today’s date will be fully edited and delivered to clients prior to my vacation. I have two album drafts left to deliver out of my HUGE list this winter – and those will be in clients’ hands by the end of this Sunday! Because a blog post from a photographer is worthless without a photo, here’s another gem from Meghan and Scott’s engagement session last week!

SDP and CaraSue Hall of Dalla Cima Salon are once again joining forces for two winter boudoir marathons! The first will be Saturday, February 11th and the second will be Saturday, March 31st. Slots are available as early as 9am and as late as 4pm. Ladies will spend the first half of the session (plan to spend two hours with us!) with CaraSue having professional hair and makeup done, then the second half with me creating some super sexy images for the loved one in your life! These sessions are UNFORGETTABLE gifts for your fiancรฉ, husband or boyfriend.

We’ve already booked a few sessions for each date but we have plenty of room for YOU! Please
email me for available times and a contract to book your spot. You’ll receive a disc of edited images from the session, or for a small up-charge, you can swap the disc for a 6×6 album. These are SUPER fun sessions and CaraSue and I are only able to offer 2 to 3 of these per year due to our wedding schedules, so be sure to take advantage now! I’m so excited to now have my studio in which to shoot boudoir, the vintage vibe and cool old furniture is just perfect for these sessions. And with CaraSue’s Dalla Cima Salon located RIGHT ACROSS THE HALLWAY (same building!), well, how can you go wrong?

Hope to see you in February or March! (if those dates don’t work for you, I offer private sessions including mini sessions every Monday! see my full boudoir guide here!)

Print rights, copyrights, and you, the client

With a weekend off from weddings, I don’t have a wedding to blog this week. I always make sure to do an informative post for clients on those days (check out my ways to make the most of your engagement session and ten easy (free!) ways to make your wedding day photography better from the past several months!) The past few days, copyrights, stolen images and print rights have been a hot topic of discussion among local photographers. I find that few consumers truly understand copyright and print rights and when they can and cannot reproduce an image. I hope this post will educate a bit on this topic.

Most of my portrait clients purchase a disc of at least a few of the images from their sessions, and my wedding packages all include a disc of high resolution, edited images. Unless the client chooses not to, I always blog highlights from sessions where the client is going to be receiving images on disc, and allow these clients to use their “sneak peek” images on Facebook, with watermark intact, since they have purchased the full-resolution images that will be coming later on disc. I actually enjoy the excitement that comes with sharing around their preview images. The operative word here is “purchased” – the clients in this case have paid for images on disc already.

These clients receive a print release with their discs. This is NOT a copyright release and this is a term I hear bantered around by clients (and usually prospective clients when inquiring if they get a “copyright release” with their discs) incorrectly. What is the difference? A print release specifically states, in my case, that the client may print the images, design an album with their images, and share them online with friends or on personal websites. The images are NOT for commercial use. A simple way of thinking of it may be as a “shared copyright” of sorts. Why not a copyright release?

A copyright release turns over ALL rights to the images to the client. This means I no longer own any stake in the images that I took, and I have no permission to use them on my website, on prints or in albums in studio. Obviously, as photographers we gain new business by showing….our work! If we turned over copyright to our clients, we would no longer have work to show because we would not own any of our work. Purchasing full copyright to images is MUCH different than purchasing print rights to images, and would come with a pretty hefty price tag. (Think of purchasing the copyright to a song vs. rights to play it!) I hear a lot of fairly new photographers throwing around the term ‘copyright release’ as well, and I hope this post educates at least a couple of them a bit as it can put you in a pickle if you don’t watch your legalese!

Why does this matter to me, the photographer, you ask? I mean, most of my clients get the image on disc, with printing rights, so what is my concern? I have two. The first is usage of web-resolution images for printing. I realize clients get SUPER excited about getting prints on hand from their wedding or portrait session. However, the images posted to my blog are NOT optimized for printing (and are watermarked). The image quality of the final product will be subpar, and of course being an angst-ridden artist (ha!) I want my work displayed at its best. And the images of YOU displayed at their best! If you just can’t wait to get your hands on one of the images, and you’ve purchased a disc from me, just send me an email and I’d be happy to send that particular image along for your use, in full resolution with the proper print release.

The second and biggest thing that affects us as photographers concerns stealing of unpurchased images, and this is where I’m going to spend most of my time here today. As a former event (horse show) photographer, this is a huge issue and has become so widespread that many photographers have had to seek income elsewhere (such as weddings) or have closed shop altogether. Event photographers are hardly ever paid by the event to be present. When I shot shows, I had to front my gas, meals, and hotel in hopes that a lot of exhibitors would buy prints or files from me. How disheartening to spend this money, then go home and see that some of these exhibitors had either a) taken an iPhone image of the proofing screen at my ordering station at the show and posted it, or b) had done a screen capture of the image on my online proofing site. If you have not purchased an image from your photographer, and you do this, you are stealing. There’s no kinder way to put it – it’s stealing and it’s also copyright infringement. Yes, the photo is of you, or your daughter, or other family member – but the photographer was contracted to cover the event by event management, or in the case of a portrait session, hired by you to shoot – and retains copyright to the images created. We all work hard to pay our bills, right? Well, photographers choose photography as a way to earn a living, and our livelihoods depend on being compensated fairly for our work. Our long hard hours on our feet, time away from our families, and expense incurred photographing the client. Whether you were an exhibitor at a horse show, a parent at a softball game that had a photographer present, or a portrait client who had a session done but has not purchased prints or files, you MUST have purchased the image to use it online.

XW1L2205
an example of an unpurchased proof (from my horse show days) – NOT cool to steal and share on Facebook!

XW1L4855 copy
another example with a different watermark. If the image is watermarked, ask before using. If you’ve purchased a digital file or print from the photographer, they can tell you where you can and cannot use the image (and may supply you with a low-resolution copy for Facebook use, or give you the option to purchase one at a nominal fee!).

Hopefully this helped clients understand the differences between print and copyright releases, and when it is and is not legal to print an image or share an image online. The bottom line is – if you have a question about whether you can or cannot do something with a professionally-shot image, ask. And if you’ve not purchased an image (or disc of images) but wish to share it online, most photographers will sell a web-resolution image for ย a small fee for you to use on Facebook or your personal website.

With SDP’s next wedding scheduled for December 10th, you can look for next week’s Wedding Wednesday article to be the first in a winter series featuring other fantastic local wedding vendors! Stay tuned! ๐Ÿ™‚
