Jessica + Drew | a snow-covered engagement session

January 6th, 2013

Jessica and Drew had the PERFECT day for a winter engagement session; not only was it sunny and unusually warm (mid-50s), but the snowfall we’d had two days prior hadn’t yet melted. Perfection! I seriously was giddy when they arrived in Parkville to get the session underway – I absolutely adore shooting around and in snow. I had reason too – these two are so much fun (as was their dog, Rocky!) and I so thoroughly enjoyed their session that I truly was not looking forward to dusk! 🙂 Enjoy!

Gina + Don | a holiday Union Station and Plaza engagement session

Gina and Don met me just before Christmas to do their engagement session – which meant both of their chosen locations, the Country Club Plaza and Union Station, were resplendent in holiday decor…but it also meant they were JAM PACKED with people! In fact, parking at Union Station was quite a “treat” as Santa was there for the kiddos as well as the Thomas the Train display – ooooh boy. Shooting there was equally as challenging with people everywhere – we were able to strategically avoid them sometimes, and incorporated the crowd into the shot at other times! These two will be getting married in a much warmer locale – California – next year. Congratulations and Happy New Year, you two!

Mick + Caitlin | a New Year’s Eve proposal in Excelsior Springs!

January 1st, 2013

Oooh boy, this is a fun one. Oooh boy, this is a fun one. As you all are well aware this is PRIME SEASON for fresh proposals (my inbox supports this with the number of wedding photography inquiries I’ve been receiving each day since Christmas!). New Year’s Eve was no exception! I didn’t have a wedding – having been busy shooting a couple of them on December 28th and 29th – and was instead looking forward to spending the evening with my husband Jim at the dinner theater he operates, the Paradise Playhouse Dinner Theatre in Excelsior Springs (if you haven’t gone – GO! It’s a GREAT time!), where a great party was planned. Enter Mick. He is an actor and has appeared in plays at Paradise (and will be in the upcoming show “Saving Grace” starting January 18th!), and his girlfriend Caitlin has been in a play at the theater as well as working as a server occasionally. Caitlin’s dad Cress is also the Artistic Director at the theater, so lots of ties there! Mick contacted Jim to see how he could work out proposing to Caitlin at the New Year’s Eve party. He wanted to do it on stage, but needed to get Caitlin up there as well without making her suspicious. Jim had the idea, between performers, to go up and thank the staff and actors in attendance and then hand the mic to Mick. And that’s exactly what they did! Here’s the actual proposal in pictures, as well as a couple of shots we snapped in the fresh (and still falling) snow outside of the theater! This is a fun one, guys. Congratulations, Mick and Caitlin!!

My hubby Jim introduces some of the people that make the theater run!

..then hands the mic to Mick, who then thanks Jim for everything at the theater (innocent enough, right?) PS, that’s Caitlin’s dad, Cress, to her right, as well as Paradise Playhouse Operations Director Angela Childers and Helen Price, House Manager.

He then thanks Caitlin and talks about how long they’ve been together…

Shawnee Mission Park has long been a favorite of my clients – it is huge, gorgeous, and has neverending opportunities for unique photos. Every time I go there I find new things to shoot. For that reason, I love it. I also love late day light this time of year. Most of my clients say the same thing – “I hate being cold!” But honestly, it is WORTH it for winter light. The sun’s angle is much different than the summer, even late-day, and the light on a sunny day is quite simply TO DIE FOR. It’s my favorite time of year to shoot, even if I do have to bundle up a bit. So, Kylie and Jared got one of my favorite locations coupled with one of my favorite times of year to shoot bundled all into one on a really warm November day right before Thanksgiving.

They also made me super excited for the 2013 wedding season, ALREADY. Aren’t these two redonkulously adorable? Can’t wait for their wedding! What a genuinely happy couple.

Sarah + Derek | Liberty Missouri engagement session

November 14th, 2012

Sarah and Derek had the most freaky cool lighting for their session – freaky cool in a super dramatic way. Low, scattered dark clouds and a sunset that gave the golden cast that is often achieved after a thunderstorm has just passed. It’s the kind of light you can only plan so much for (by shooting at sunset) – but the quality of the light with the clouds absolutely cannot be planned! They also had some gorgeous fall colors for their session in and around Liberty, Missouri (with some shots out in the countryside as well!). I’ve just hit my first anniversary of having the studio in this town, and I’m absolutely in love with it – what great areas to shoot, right outside my door! These two will be getting married in early spring – back in….Liberty! Enjoy!
