Laura and Ryan won my engagement session contest at the KC Weddings Bridal Show – which was actually so ironic as they had already met with me regarding photographing their wedding! (KC Weddings handles the contest and drawing – so it was by COMPLETE chance that they won!) We tried to do their session back in July, but faced with a day over 100 degrees, Laura decided to wait for cooler weather. While it was still fairly toasty last Monday, it was a definite change over 100+ degree temperatures. What a fun couple! I love Laura’s smile – and the two are so happy together. Makes me definitely look forward to shooting their wedding next June – on my own wedding anniversary 🙂 Thanks to Kelly Knetter for assisting me on this session!

Shannon and David met me the same day as Sophie’s senior shoot below – but late in the afternoon. The light was just as gorgeous as it was in the morning. Oh sun, how I’ve missed thee! We wandered around the West Bottoms and the River Market during the shoot. You’ll be seeing more of this couple in mid July when I shoot their wedding here in Kansas City!

I LOVE the way these two smile at each other. What a great connection. And they did it through the entire shoot!

Seth called me last week and wanted to schedule a “surprise” engagement session for his fiance, Adriane – Seth is a Marine and is returning to Quantico, Virginia today. We scheduled for Sunday – which turned out to not be so much of a surprise when Seth realized Adriane was going to have to plan clothing changes and such! The weather the first half of the day was positively dreary with heavy mist and low overcast, but it broke up enough in the afternoon that we were able to get some serious work done. We wandered quite a bit and discovered a lot of new places – which I always appreciate! Kansas City is just a great city to explore from a photographic standpoint. I had a hard time narrrowing down the selection for the blog…there are some additional shots on my Facebook fan page (you are a fan of SDP, right? 😉 ) Seth and Adriane – I wish you the BEST of times ahead!!

Ok. Let’s set one thing straight – Semper Fi! (my father was a Marine, Vietnam vet – and my assistant Lori’s son Ted just became one as well!)

Megan and Jeff: Kansas City Engagement Photography

February 14th, 2010

I always encourage couples to do an engagement session with me if I’m shooting their wedding, and it’s because it “breaks in” the photographer-client relationship. Call it a dry run, if you will. I always encourage couples to do an engagement session with me if I’m shooting their wedding, and it’s because it “breaks in” the photographer-client relationship. Call it a dry run, if you will. You get the uncomfortable stiffness in front of the camera out of the way, and you get to know me and how I work. Come wedding day, me being all up in your face with my camera is old hat. (well, maybe not IN your face, but….) Well, I got to know Megan and Jeff a leeetle TOO well Saturday as when we were shooting at Union Station towards the end of the shoot, I fell down the stairs. I fell DOWN THE STAIRS. In my hurry to get a new memory card, or maybe another lens…I don’t even remember, I just remember completely missing a step with my foot and going oh *@!*&$ before I even started going down because I knew what was coming. I fell down 3 or 4 steps, and ALL that stopped me was Megan and Jeff’s legs. With my 5D Mark II in my hands. Luckily, the camera is just fine and I’m a little stiff but (hopefully? tomorrow is the 2nd day after!) ok.

But that’s just a small part of the day. It was a decent day – cloudy but still and at least not frigid, and we had fun. We got coffee, we visited, and we shot like crazy. Mike Tsai (of 4Honor Photography) who will be second-shooting for me some this year, joined in for a while to try a lens as well. We went all over the Crossroads District and Union Station, and here are the results.

Thanks to good friend Lori Fetterling for helping with lighting! Megan and Jeff, I am very much looking forward to shooting your wedding next January, you all are a blast!

Last weekend I went to Piropos’ Parkville private dining location to shoot the facility all set up for a holiday party. For those of you who don’t know, Piropos is my favorite. restaurant. ever. The food is FABULOUS. I wish I were independently wealthy…I’d eat there weekly. It’s just that good.

The main restaurant is located at the shops at Briarcliff – and the original restaurant in quaint and historic Parkville remains as a private dining and special event facility. Hello brides? Need a GREAT space with OUT OF THIS WORLD food? Look no further. And the restaurant’s manager and events coordinator, Rachel, is about as good as they get at what she does!

While we are talking about people who are good at what they do, Shana Vaughn at Shana Vaughn Designs did the floral arrangements for the below pictured event. One word – GORGEOUSSSS! Shana works regularly with Piropos and her business is also located in the Briarcliff Village shops. Again, brides – need beyond fabulous flowers? Here is another great vendor to put on your list!

I’m very excited to work with these ladies in the future!

Without further adieu, here’s some images from the weekend.
