I mean really, who has a 78 degree day for their wedding in Kansas in JULY? Danielle and Brad do! What a gorgeous day to have an outdoor ceremony at Mildale Farm in Edgerton, Kansas! I’ve known Danielle through the horse show world for years, so this wedding was a lot of fun for me (and made me feel a bit old, to boot – her siblings are all so grown up now!). Here’s a sneak peek at their beautiful, almost fall-like wedding day.

For the second weekend in a row, second shooter Nancy Sikes and I were treated to a farm wedding; Samantha and Jamison got married on a private farm near Baldwin City, Kansas. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had some strange sense of humor last Saturday for their outdoor wedding ceremony and tent reception; with near record lows forecast for Saturday night, and overcast, breezy skies during the day, it was, well….cold. These two never ONCE griped about it, or lamented about how much warmer or nicer it could have been – they just marched right on with their day. And you know what? That tent stayed pretty darn warm! What a gorgeous venue for a gorgeous wedding – Samantha put so many personal touches into her details, and the house and barn were so gorgeous, that the entire day was full of eye candy for us photographers. And what better way to cap it off than some bride and groom photos in a field of wildflowers? Enjoy! (And Sam and Jamison, just so you know, got away from the cold to sunny, warm Costa Rica! I hope you all are enjoying it, because you DESERVE it!)

Meghan and Scott deserved a gorgeous wedding day; as they were forced to shoot their engagement session in frigid cold temperatures last winter. They were both temporarily moving to Colorado for school; so didn’t have the opportunity for a reschedule. It still ranks as one of my favorite sessions! They are such a sweet couple, and their wedding was just as enjoyable as their engagement session. (Meghan and Scott: Mike Tsai and I appreciated our “sweetheart table” at the reception! πŸ™‚ ) Lake Quivira served as a gorgeous backdrop for their wedding reception, and some outdoor photos – no one seemed to mind the sand in their shoes. And of course we HAD to do a night shot on the docks. Congratulations you two!

Lauren and Jayme did a GREAT job of not letting the unrelenting heat get to them on their wedding day. We spent our outside time shooting in the absolute heat of the day – everyone was sweaty, 2nd shooter Mike Tsai and I were getting lightheaded…and understandably so, the temperature while we were shooting was 106 degrees! Alas, though, as couples don’t have a choice in the weather they’re given on their wedding day, we pressed ahead, spending as much time as we could stand shooting outdoors, then moving into the lobby areas of the Overland Park Marriott, the site of the reception, for some indoor shots once we hit our limit. (I want to at this point thank EVERY SINGLE member of the wedding party for sticking with us as we shot outside – I know it was miserable but you were troopers and let us get some great shots without complaint!) Mike and I were careful to leave the wedding party members that we weren’t shooting on the bus to recoup in the AC while we traded groups out to cool off for a while.

I absolutely adore this couple and their families! Such touching moments throughout the day, and both Lauren and Jayme were SO relaxed. And it shows!Β Besides, they, like me, own a Corgi – which undoubtedly are the COOLEST dogs ever. (Right Lauren? Hi Cooper!) Β I hope you two had a fabulous honeymoon and enjoyed some tropical temperatures that were, um, a bit more moderate than what we’ve been experiencing here.

Stay cool everyone!

Stephanie + Brady | one very fortunate Kansas wedding!

April 19th, 2012

I felt for Stephanie and Brady as the forecasts became more daunting. I felt for Stephanie and Brady as the forecasts became more daunting. Simple forecasts of rain became more strongly-worded; starting with “chance for severe weather” to “severe weather likely Saturday” to the formidable usage of “tornado outbreak”, “strong tornadoes possible” and “high risk area for tornadoes”. With my phone radar in hand, I headed west into the “high risk area” for Stephanie and Brady’s Topeka wedding last Saturday. Well, we were lucky. And had a FANTASTIC day. Stephanie had arranged for us to gain access to the Topeka Capital building if we had bad weather, so we’d have a really nice indoor area to shoot. When the time came to head out for Stephanie and Brady’s first look and portraits, we made the call to take the chance for outdoor photos, and I’m so glad they did – they turned out SO gorgeous! This was another day of wonderful families and friends and so many touching moments, besides the luck they had on their side in the weather department. I mean, who would NOT cry when Stephanie opened up Brady’s gift – a ceramic piece he made in ceramics class, and not just any class, but the very class where they met? A joyful (and sometimes funny! I reference the unity candle πŸ˜‰ ) ceremony followed, then a wonderful, NON-STORMY reception. In fact, the sky was just starting to illuminate with lighting as I left the reception, and I thought back to how fortunate we really were, as I heard news reports of tornadoes causing damage literally all around us.

Stephanie and Brady, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your wonderful day! I’m sorry I brought the wind with me to both your engagement session and wedding day, but I think it still worked out ok πŸ˜‰

I mean, it rained ALL week. Six days in a row! Friday, rain FINALLY got itself moved on eastward and the skies parted partly cloudy for the most picture-perfect wedding day ever last Saturday. Since when do you have a 75 degree wedding day in March? Since when are the trees already blooming, and the grass already tall and green in March? An odd weather pattern we are in, to be sure. We all may be hating it come summertime, but right now, brides and grooms all over the midwest are rejoicing in fantastic, beautifully warm wedding days.

I’d never been to Holton, Kansas before last Saturday – so I didn’t know what to expect, other than what Kylie had told me about the town. What I found was a wonderfully clean and quaint farming town about 30 miles north of Topeka, with an idyllic town square and lots of places to shoot. Including a golf course where I came about two feet from being clocked by a golf ball while shooting! But “almost” only counts in horse shoes. Nancy Sikes, my 2nd shooter, and I felt so wonderfully welcome from the moment we arrived at the salon where the ladies were getting ready.

As usual, I’m putting myself in overdrive to stay on schedule, and it’s late on a Friday evening so I’ll quit talking about how wonderful this couple and their families were and just let you see for yourself. πŸ™‚ Congratulations, Kylie and Chris!

A reminder that the studio is closed until March 11th for vacation – after shooting Megan and Eric’s wedding today, I’m headed to Cancun (YEAH!) through next Sunday for some R&R before crazy busy wedding season kicks into high gear. My phone will not be on (duh, cha-ching!), however, I will be checking in on my email every couple of days. So, if you’ve been thinking about inquiring about your wedding or a portrait session, go right ahead and I can get you started with some basic information to hold you over until I return! And when I return, I can’t WAIT to share Megan and Eric’s fabulous wedding with you all. Below is but just one teaser of a LOT of awesome that was captured today. There’ll be lots more news to hit the blog as well – lots brewing at the ol’ SDP. This year is just going to be spectacular and I CANNOT WAIT!

Adios, amigos (and amigas!)

You probably remember Tiffany and Roy. Who could forget a couple who did their engagement session in a donut shop (one of several that Roy owns) and a movie theater? I certainly didn’t. Their wedding day was equally as memorable: a warm, breezy, almost spring-like February day, Tiffany’s bright royal blue and purple colors, and a tear-jerking serenade by Roy to Tiffany during the ceremony – completely to Tiffany’s surprise. This couple has been an item for FIFTEEN YEARS, folks! They definitely made it official in grand style. And now they are honeymooning in grand style – in ICELAND. Seriously, how incredibly cool is THAT?
