Nick and Jessie’s story of how they got engaged and how I came to be their wedding photographer is definitely the most unique story of the year. You see, I like to fly airplanes. I like to teach people how to fly airplanes, and I also during the holidays do a few Plaza scenic flights for couples out of my flight school, ATD Flight Systems. Nick called me to schedule a Plaza flight last year and told me that it would be a proposal flight. Of course, these are my favorite Plaza flights 😉 and I anxiously awaited their flight hoping for good weather and no reschedules. The weather WAS good, Nick DID propose to Jessie, and then next thing I know, I’m meeting them to discuss shooting their wedding!

So obviously I had a fun connection with the two – I mean, how many wedding photographers are present at the moment their couples actually GET engaged! 🙂

We had cool but sunny weather for Nick and Jessie’s wedding day, which started off in tiny Wea, Kansas near the Miami/Johnson county line at Queen of the Holy Rosary. After the ceremony, we headed on to Liberty Memorial for some sunset shots and after a brief stop at QuikTrip (yes, really!) we headed to the Crossroads Art District for some night shots. We finished off the night at the Sawyer Room downtown which is one of my absolute favorite venues. Second shooter extraordinaire Mike Tsai helped me with this one, and a few of the shots below are his!

We will start this one off with the shot that started it all! This is last holiday season at the Kansas City downtown airport, at the end of our flight and just minutes after Nick popped the question. 🙂

Lauren + Nick: married | Sawyer Room, Kansas City

Lauren and Nick couldn’t have had polar opposite weather for their wedding day as compared to the weather we had for their engagement session last New Year’s Eve. It was in the teens with frigid wind chills then; now we have heat indices spiking over 100 degrees each and every day. But as they did with their engagement session, they handled the heat as best as anyone could. Oh, and…

you should have seen the thunderstorm that hit during their ceremony. If rain on one’s wedding day is good luck, Lauren and Nick have several lifetimes’ worth as the storm that hit the EXACT moment the ceremony started was one that really wanted attention. It was so crazy, the wind sucked open not only the front church doors, but the doors clear across the lobby opening into the sanctuary. It was scary. But the ceremony went on and after we left the church, there were limbs and even trees down everywhere! The sun came right back out, though, and we had sun for our very brief stop by the Crossroads Art District for wedding party photos.

Anyways, enough backstory. I think these photos really tell the story of the day – the pure emotion and joy – not my words! Lauren and Nick, you all were a blast to work with throughout your engagement and your wedding day and I wish you the best of luck. Oh, and I’m VERY jealous of the cruise you are presently enjoying! 🙂

Some of the photos you will see below are courtesy of my super-talented second shooter, Mike Tsai of 4Honor Photography.
