It’s been a while since I’ve had a basic studio update and with fall portrait season upon us (and the second “busy season” for weddings), it’s probably high time for one!

First off, thank you to ALL of my clients who have worked with me thus far this year. It’s been a wonderful year so far and I’ve worked with so many wonderful people. The June rush is over with and I’m currently playing catch up, pushing editing out the door from that crazy month! My first update is the most pressing ,and that’s the closure of the studio at the end of this week for vacation.

UPCOMING VACATION/STUDIO CLOSURE

I’ve posted this a bit on my Facebook business page (you have “liked” SDP, haven’t you?), but I’ll make the announcement as well here – the studio will be closed from this Friday, July 20th, through Sunday, July 29th. My husband, Jim, and I take a vacation to Wisconsin each summer with our airplane for a week of flying and camping with a group of close friends at a small fly-in gathering; we also make a trip over to Oshkosh for the huge EAA Airventure fly-in and airshow/convention. I will be out of the office shooting a wedding this Friday, July 20th then leave town on Saturday the 21st. I will keep up with emails as best as I can during this time (I usually try to catch up every couple of days) – but please note, I am spending a LOT of time during this week in some pretty remote areas and my cell coverage is usually slim to none. For that reason, I will not be able to return voice messages until my return to Kansas City and the office on Monday, July 30th. Please instead direct your inquiries and any other questions to my email at sarah@sarahdickersonphoto.com for more prompt response. I sure appreciate your cooperation and understanding; I get little to no true downtime as a business owner, so I treasure this week I get to spend with my husband sharing our passion for flying, and relaxing before the crazy fall season sets in.

Things slow a bit in July and August traditionally, mostly due to the heat we see this time of year and the fact that fall and cooler temperatures are not far off. Most people just hold off for fall portrait sessions at this point which brings up my first important update on the shooting side of things:

PORTRAIT CLIENTS

– Fall will fill QUICKLY. August is already full. I cannot take a large number of portrait sessions as I have to assure a certain number of hours in the office each week to complete wedding edits for clients in a timely fashion, not to mention the portrait session edits themselves. Most portrait sessions, including packing, prep, and drive time, take approximately 4 hours out of my workday on the day of the session itself. As you know that is a significant amount of time – and I can’t schedule portrait sessions every day or I would never, ever get editing, order fulfillment, and emails and other correspondence taken care of in any sort of a timely fashion, especially given that I’m out one full day each week shooting a wedding as well! *I ONLY TAKE 2 PORTRAIT SESSIONS PER WEEK. During the fall season, these go very quickly and sometimes October fills before we hit the end of August. I can’t make exceptions to this – once I’m full, I’m more than happy to refer clients off to other photographers who have availability.

– Every fall I get a lot of emails asking when peak color will occur. I’ll just go ahead and answer that question now – it never, ever occurs at the same time each year. There are many factors that go into the timing and quality of fall color, the most important being temperatures and rainfall, and to a lesser extent windy days which strip the trees once change occurs and can shorten the peak color period. The last two autumn seasons saw very late color change due to mild temps and dry conditions (occurring at the very end of October and into the first week of November), and the colors were unimpressive (and that is being understated!) due to the dry weather we experienced. We are deep into what could be a record-breaking drought – so please keep in mind that our fall color this year may be completely nonexistent. There are already many trees showing signs of distress and browning leaves. The bushes outside my studio are turning brown and crumbling. Most trees may go from green to brown with little color. I will work with you to find an area that might have color – but again, this will be impossible to predict timing on not knowing what fall has in store for us; and may not occur much at all. I’m hoping that will change!

– I will have a new portrait guide coming out August 1st! Stay tuned, I’ll have a blog post highlighting this new guide and where to find it on the site.

WEDDINGS

This has been a FABULOUS year for weddings! It’s my 3rd year in a row of shooting 30+ weddings and I can’t be more thankful for so many clients who have entrusted me to capture their wedding days. I am no longer accepting weddings for 2012 – yes, we are full! 2013 is filling rapidly and I will be cutting back next year – I’m planning to cap my bookings at 20, so if you are recently engaged and planning a wedding for next season, the time to start investigating photography is NOW! I am booked full for April, May and June of next year already, but have availability all other months at this point.

That’s about it from here – everyone stay cool and enjoy the rest of your summer! 🙂

It’s here! I’m finally (mostly) moved into the new studio. Come by the open house next Thursday and take a look! CaraSue Hall will also have a concurrent open house at her new Dalla Cima Salon (right next door on the same floor!), what a great time to not only check out her salon services, but also her full-service wedding makeup and hair work. I’m super excited to have her next door, so clients can utilize her prior to shoots! Our new studio is PERFECTLY suited for babies, small children, and boudoir sessions right in-house, plus, we have the quaint Liberty square right out the door and several fantastic nearby parks for location shooting.

The studio is in old downtown Liberty, and from I-35, is most easily accessed by exiting at 152 Highway and heading east into Liberty. Just stay on 152 until it turns into Kansas Ave, and eventually as it hits the downtown district it will go to one lane. You don’t need to turn at all until you hit the square – after you pass the old courthouse on your left (impossible to miss), take a left on Water Street and go straight past Jesse James Bank on your right (on the corner of the square). 111 N. Water Street is a 3-story brick house that sits RIGHT behind Jesse James Bank. There is a small parking lot on the near side of the building, and PLENTY of street parking as well.

In other news, quickly: please note that the studio will be closed next week on Monday and Tuesday, as I’ll be attending a two day photography workshop. I will not have email and voicemail access these two days, so please be patient! The studio will also be closed November 23rd – November 27th for the Thanksgiving holiday, as I will be traveling to Kentucky to spend the weekend with family.

And did someone mention holiday? YES, the SDP 3rd Annual Holiday Sale is coming! 25% off everything in the online ordering galleries from November 25th-December 9th. Stay tuned here on the blog for more information and the discount code – 2011 clients will also receive an email with the information.

Have a great weekend, everyone, and hope to see you at the open house!

…and more will be coming! My long-awaited product guide will be finished and linked on the blog and website this week, and will feature detailed information about all of the products that SDP offers. Below are some photos of a few of our samples – albums, prints, canvas wraps. And, we’ve got MORE samples coming. MORE wedding albums. MORE canvases. MORE print options and MORE ideas for the seniors, and families….smaller albums to suit these types of sittings. I’m so excited!!

To start things off, here is but a bit of what we can do for you.

Prints and canvases
XW1L0516
SDP offers many different print options. Not only can you have your enlargements printed by our SUPER lab on everything from matte photo paper to metallics, textures and even elegant art paper, but they can be mounted to a number of substrates such as styrene (a dense, rigid plastic-like material) and foam core. Adding these backings makes your enlargement much more durable and will help it stand the test of time. Of course, it’s hard to show the various paper options in a photo – so schedule an appointment to see for yourself!

What we can show are our canvases. The finishing is superb and there are lots of options – from types of hanging hardware to backing, depth of the canvas frame (1.5″ and 2.5″ are available) and finish. These are ready to go right on the wall, with the image wrapping completely around the sides of the frame. Truly a conversation piece.

Albums
XW1L0915

We realize that not every budget allows for a slick flush-mount album. So SDP offers THREE different grades of albums. All of these albums are available in multiple size options and with numerous cover styles – everything from leather to linen to image wraps. The standard album in our product guide is priced with 15 spreads (30 pages) and an image-wrap cover. Options are priced as add-ons to this standard album, including cover options, different sizes and additional spreads.

We’re pretty proud of our flush-mount albums, and our printer delivers product SUPER FAST, compared to other suppliers. This is the “album option B” available with some of our wedding packages.
XW1L0877

Super thick, UV-coated, archival interior spreads.
XW1L0881

Nearly indestructible cover.
XW1L0882

Our next option, our mid-level option, comes from the same supplier as our flush mount. The pages, while still thick, are somewhat flexible compared to the completely rigid flush mount pages. They lie perfectly flat, and the color reproduction is incredible. This sample is shown with the optional dust jacket.
XW1L0891

XW1L0888

XW1L0894

Our final option is our most economical. Pages are hinged at the binding to lay flat, and are a heavy coverstock weight. They can be UV coated for additional durability for an additional charge. This particular sample is laid out as a guestbook album with blank spaces for wedding guests to sign (engaged couples, here’s a GREAT idea for your engagement sessions!) with a leatherette cover. The image wrap cover (as with the previous two versions) comes standard with this option. This album is “album option A” in SDP’s wedding package descriptions, and is also a great option for guestbooks and senior and equine session albums among many other uses!

XW1L0906

Hinged interior pages

More products coming soon – and as always, email me with questions about these or any of our other products!
