Coming up! – and some notes on 2014.

August 31st, 2013

2013 has been a VERY good year so far. And 2014 is going gangbusters in the booking department for weddings. 2013 has been a VERY good year so far. And 2014 is going gangbusters in the booking department for weddings. With that being said, it’s time for a periodic “State of the Studio” address and some reminders for 2014 brides.

As I announced in the top section of this blog, I am not accepting portrait sessions right now outside of regular clients (of which I have several sweet “faithfuls” πŸ™‚ ). This would include seniors, families, and “standalone” engagement sessions not booked with a wedding package. I am instead concentrating efforts on my forte, which is wedding work.

Now, for 2014 weddings. I only have a handful (and I mean *HANDFUL*) of slots left for 2014. Yes, the season is nearly booked. My inquiries have really picked up the past 3 weeks. If you have inquired and are thinking of getting together with me for a consultation, or if you have met with me already, please know that the 2014 books are very, very close to being closed. I would hate for anyone to be left out! Now, what constitutes booking? I want to make sure no one loses their date, first and foremost. I give all couples who meet with me, whether it be in person, via skype or via phone, 72 hours in which their date is held. After this time, if you still haven’t made a decision, that’s fine! But, please understand that your date is open, and at risk of booking. I cannot hold dates without a signed contract and retainer. A verbal “yes, we’d love to book you!” does not constitute a booking. (believe me, as much as I’d love to say it does, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told that over the years and the couple in fact did NOT book for whatever reason.) Your date is considered secured when I have your retainer and signed contract in my hot little hands. At that point, the date is yours and no one else can have it!

Sorry for the boring notes about the booking process, but I do reiterate it a couple of times per year so those that want to book understand the process! I try to make booking your wedding photography simple and no-fuss, but I have to operate in a manner that is fair to all parties. Booking is on a first-come, first-served basis as far as getting that contract and retainer in place. I take a set number of weddings per year, and once I reach that number, I close the books; and as stated earlier, I’m very close to that number for 2014.

Also, just to close out on the process, a reminder that final payment is due 14 days (2 weeks) prior to your wedding date. We’ll set up a final consultation prior to your date to go over the timeline and details, and after that point I create and send your final invoice. Of course, you may pay any amount at any time, and I do get couples who choose to break their balance up into payments over time and this is totally fine!

I am so looking forward to 2014 and so excited that my season is almost completely set in stone! Look for many wonderful weddings to hit the blog this fall as we head into “busy season number two” in September and October, plus a chance to meet some of my great 2014 clients as they begin shooting their engagement sessions. Below is a preview from one such couple, Matt and Alison, who shot their session during last week’s heat! Their blog highlights will be coming your way as well as Samer and Anna’s wedding highlights, both in the next few days.

Have a great holiday weekend!

November 21st, 2012

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving! I’m leaving on a jet plane at the crack of dawn tomorrow, headed over the hill and through the woods to (almost) gradmother’s house. Happy (almost) Thanksgiving! I’m leaving on a jet plane at the crack of dawn tomorrow, headed over the hill and through the woods to (almost) gradmother’s house. Actually my 93 year old great-aunt; my grandmother’s sister. My grandmother passed in 2005 and she and my great-aunt were seriously best of friends their whole lives. Therefore my great-aunt visited KC often and we visited her in Louisville, Kentucky often. She is a third grandmother to me. I am THANKFUL she has lived such a long and healthy life and THANKFUL to be headed to Kentucky tomorrow for a few days with her and all of my other family that lives in Louisville. Her father died just shy of his 104th birthday; she is so healthy we all think she is aiming to beat him out! πŸ™‚

Before I go to the Bluegrass State, I wanted to give everyone some sneak peeks that have been posted on my Facebook page – these are all sessions that will be blogged after the holiday weekend, all shot in the past week or so. Family sessions, senior sessions, engagement sessions, I still am very busy!

After these sneak peek images is a repeat post of my SALE flyer! The SDP 4th Annual Holiday Sale starts Friday, THIS Friday! Go shopping all you want and get 25% off EVERYTHING in my online galleries Friday through December 7th! All you need to do is enter the code SDPHolidaySale2012 at checkout. Now’s a great time to buy that piece of canvas wall art you always wanted, or to buy prints of your favorite shots for all of your family!

Here are those sneak peek images, followed by the sale flyer! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Fall is upon us (shortly) – more studio updates!

August 8th, 2012

With fall comes the busiest time of the year for portrait sessions. It also brings the second wave of “busy season” for those of us who do weddings. I’ve taken most of the work that comes my way the past two years – up until I couldn’t schedule any more. With this workload has come […]

With fall comes the busiest time of the year for portrait sessions. It also brings the second wave of “busy season” for those of us who do weddings. I’ve taken most of the work that comes my way the past two years – up until I couldn’t schedule any more. With this workload has come 14 hour days, 6 days a week (the 7th being Saturday, which is wedding day and I’m shooting all day!), phone calls and emails at all hours, missed family events, missed time with friends, and a lot of stress. I truly love every minute of what I do and I love my clients equally as much. I’m blessed that my business is so successful and I have so many wonderful clients who support it! But alas, the time has come to cut back and repay those who are near and dear to me (friends, family and my husband) who have sacrificed so much as I’ve started up this business!

We’re headed into fall and I have 14 weddings on the books between now and the middle of November! I will be limiting the number of fall sessions I take so I can keep up with the incredible amount of editing that comes with wedding work. Right now, I have availability for four sessions in September and three in October, beyond what is already booked. Please note that these are for full portrait sessions, I won’t be accepting any mini sessions during that time (unless you already have one booked with me). Β I will be offering a day of mini sessions on a Sunday in mid-November after weddings slow, so stay tuned!Β Also please note that I have NO weekend availability during this time due to my wedding schedule. I have weekday morning and evening times available for these available slots. If you want to know how many sessions I still have available, please check the status at the top of this page (in the turquoise text); I’ll do my best to keep it up to date. If you need a weekend slot, I would be happy to refer you to a photographer who specializes in portrait work and can take you on!

I have new portrait pricing that will be taking effect on August 15th. Sessions will continue to book at current rates until that time.

I will be cutting back on the amount of weddings I accept in 2013, and I’m booking fast! The first half of the year is pretty much booked full at this point, with openings still existing in the fall of 2013 and into the holidays. If you have been thinking of inquiring but holding off, shoot me an email before I am full! I can’t believe how quickly the season has filled.

In addition to my concentration on weddings in 2013 I will be shortly launching a new offshoot of my studio, SDP Boudoir. I’ve been offering boudoir sessions for a while now, but have decided to separate the offering from my main studio site and tailor some packages and offerings to suit brides to be as well as ladies who want an unforgettable gift for their husband, fiance or boyfriend. Stay tuned for a link to the new site once it goes live!

Since I believe that NO blog post should go without an image, here’s one from Ashley and Kris’ wedding, of stunning bride Ashley – their blog highlights will be up tomorrow!

It’s been a while since I’ve had a basic studio update and with fall portrait season upon us (and the second “busy season” for weddings), it’s probably high time for one!

First off, thank you to ALL of my clients who have worked with me thus far this year. It’s been a wonderful year so far and I’ve worked with so many wonderful people. The June rush is over with and I’m currently playing catch up, pushing editing out the door from that crazy month! My first update is the most pressing ,and that’s the closure of the studio at the end of this week for vacation.

UPCOMING VACATION/STUDIO CLOSURE

I’ve posted this a bit on my Facebook business page (you have “liked” SDP, haven’t you?), but I’ll make the announcement as well here –Β the studio will be closed from this Friday, July 20th, through Sunday, July 29th. My husband, Jim, and I take a vacation to Wisconsin each summer with our airplane for a week of flying and camping with a group of close friends at a small fly-in gathering; we also make a trip over to Oshkosh for the huge EAA Airventure fly-in and airshow/convention. I will be out of the office shooting a wedding this Friday, July 20th then leave town on Saturday the 21st. I will keep up with emails as best as I can during this time (I usually try to catch up every couple of days) – but please note, I am spending a LOT of time during this week in some pretty remote areas and my cell coverage is usually slim to none. For that reason, I will not be able to return voice messages until my return to Kansas City and the office on Monday, July 30th. Please instead direct your inquiries and any other questions to my email at sarah@sarahdickersonphoto.com for more prompt response. I sure appreciate your cooperation and understanding; I get little to no true downtime as a business owner, so I treasure this week I get to spend with my husband sharing our passion for flying, and relaxing before the crazy fall season sets in.

Things slow a bit in July and August traditionally, mostly due to the heat we see this time of year and the fact that fall and cooler temperatures are not far off. Most people just hold off for fall portrait sessions at this point which brings up my first important update on the shooting side of things:

PORTRAIT CLIENTS

– Fall will fill QUICKLY. August is already full. I cannot take a large number of portrait sessions as I have to assure a certain number of hours in the office each week to complete wedding edits for clients in a timely fashion, not to mention the portrait session edits themselves. Most portrait sessions, including packing, prep, and drive time, take approximately 4 hours out of my workday on the day of the session itself. As you know that is a significant amount of time – and I can’t schedule portrait sessions every day or I would never, ever get editing, order fulfillment, and emails and other correspondence taken care of in any sort of a timely fashion, especially given that I’m out one full day each week shooting a wedding as well! *I ONLY TAKE 2 PORTRAIT SESSIONS PER WEEK. During the fall season, these go very quickly and sometimes October fills before we hit the end of August. I can’t make exceptions to this – once I’m full, I’m more than happy to refer clients off to other photographers who have availability.

– Every fall I get a lot of emails asking when peak color will occur. I’ll just go ahead and answer that question now – it never, ever occurs at the same time each year. There are many factors that go into the timing and quality of fall color, the most important being temperatures and rainfall, and to a lesser extent windy days which strip the trees once change occurs and can shorten the peak color period. The last two autumn seasons saw very late color change due to mild temps and dry conditions (occurring at the very end of October and into the first week of November), and the colors were unimpressive (and that is being understated!) due to the dry weather we experienced. We are deep into what could be a record-breaking drought – so please keep in mind that our fall color this year may be completely nonexistent. There are already many trees showing signs of distress and browning leaves. The bushes outside my studio are turning brown and crumbling. Most trees may go from green to brown with little color. I will work with you to find an area that might have color – but again, this will be impossible to predict timing on not knowing what fall has in store for us; and may not occur much at all. I’m hoping that will change!

– I will have a new portrait guide coming out August 1st! Stay tuned, I’ll have a blog post highlighting this new guide and where to find it on the site.

WEDDINGS

This has been a FABULOUS year for weddings! It’s my 3rd year in a row of shooting 30+ weddings and I can’t be more thankful for so many clients who have entrusted me to capture their wedding days. I am no longer accepting weddings for 2012 – yes, we are full! 2013 is filling rapidly and I will be cutting back next year – I’m planning to cap my bookings at 20, so if you are recently engaged and planning a wedding for next season, the time to start investigating photography is NOW! I am booked full for April, May and June of next year already, but have availability all other months at this point.

That’s about it from here – everyone stay cool and enjoy the rest of your summer! πŸ™‚

A reminder that the studio is closed until March 11th for vacation – after shooting Megan and Eric’s wedding today, I’m headed to Cancun (YEAH!) through next Sunday for some R&R before crazy busy wedding season kicks into high gear. My phone will not be on (duh, cha-ching!), however, I will be checking in on my email every couple of days. So, if you’ve been thinking about inquiring about your wedding or a portrait session, go right ahead and I can get you started with some basic information to hold you over until I return! And when I return, I can’t WAIT to share Megan and Eric’s fabulous wedding with you all. Below is but just one teaser of a LOT of awesome that was captured today. There’ll be lots more news to hit the blog as well – lots brewing at the ol’ SDP. This year is just going to be spectacular and I CANNOT WAIT!

Adios, amigos (and amigas!)

Some long overdue studio updates

February 15th, 2012

LOTS and LOTS of stuff going on at SDP – this is the busiest winter in our history! LOTS and LOTS of stuff going on at SDP – this is the busiest winter in our history! Usually portrait and wedding photographers see a distinct “slow season” during the winter months – perhaps it’s due in part to our super warm weather, as I’ve had a lot more portrait sessions this winter than usual. I’ve DEFINITELY had more weddings! πŸ™‚ But, to cut to the chase, there’s lots to update so here’s the scoop, in order of importance! (and on a very brief note before we get started – I’ve been sick on and off for going on 3 weeks now – the winter crud that refuses to leave Β – so at times I’ve lagged on emails and especially phone calls when I had the worst of my searing sore throat. Please be patient with me – the good news is, I’m starting to turn the corner with the load of prescriptions I was handed yesterday!)

1. STUDIO CLOSURE FOR VACATION: This is an important one – my husband Jim and I will be taking a MUCH needed vacation and will be out of the country from March 4th through March 11th. I have a wedding on Saturday, March 3rd – so, I will not be reachable via phone from the evening of Friday, March 2nd until Monday, March 12th. My phone will not be on during the time I am out of the country (um, cha-ching!). Please, during this time, email me instead at sarah@sarahdickersonphoto.com. I will be checking emails and responding – but be patient, as this is vacation πŸ˜‰ I will not be checking daily and it may take me a bit to get back with you!

2. PORTRAIT SCHEDULE: Winter is waning! Which means my weekend availability for portrait sessions goes from plentiful to nearly nil. A reminder that the studio is open 6 days per week, I am closed (and take my single day off) on Sundays so that I can spend time with my family and wonderfully tolerant husband :). If you want a Saturday spot, my last available session slots for quite some time occur on Saturday, March 17th, as wedding season kicks into high gear starting March 24th. Otherwise, we are getting daylight savings back at that time and I can easily accommodate you on a weekday evening (during the best light of the day)! I am booked full until after my return from vacation, so I am now accepting sessions beginning the week of Monday, March 12th.

3. WEDDING SCHEDULE: 2012 filled beyond my WILDEST dreams! I am accepting only two more weddings for 2012, then will close the books on the year and look ahead to 2013 – and I’m starting to book for 2013 with a handful already on the books! I’m so excited for this wedding season and all of the AWESOME COUPLES I get to work with! My best advice for those considering booking: get on the books for a consultation sooner rather than later if you have a peak season date. I could not believe how quickly 2012 filled!

4. BOUDOIR MARATHON: The February 11th boudoir marathon with CaraSue Hall of Dalla Cima Salon (located right across the hall from my studio!) was a success and is already behind us, and I’ve been shooting a lot of private boudoir sessions as well! The next (and last, until late in the year) marathon is set for Saturday, March 31st. There are only a couple of slots left so if you want one, snag it up! I’ll continue to offer full private sessions at the studio as well as mini sessions (Mondays only) and boudoir parties (for groups of 3 or more) throughout the year. For more information on my boudoir work, visit the boudoir guide here. The studio is a wonderfully vintage, elegant setting for these sessions and I’m so excited to have such a great place to shoot boudoir now!

5. FAMILY MINI SESSION DAYS: I’m offering one, *possibly* two family mini session days on a select Sunday or two this spring. These will be held in Liberty (starting out at the studio and venturing around the quaint square). I’ll have dates set before I leave for vacation. There will only be a limited amount of sessions offered – so if you want a coveted weekend slot, look for those dates (announced here and on my Facebook page). Remember, I’m otherwise closed on Sundays! πŸ™‚

6. AND FINALLY…A CONTEST! This is a different one, though, not one you have to enter! I will be shooting my 100th wedding this spring! (that’s a LOT of weddings, folks!) The lucky 100th couple to be in front of my lens on their wedding day will win a VERY special prize. The fun part? I already know who it is! Stay tuned for this one πŸ™‚

That’s it for the updates! I hope to soon move to a newsletter format to keep clients abreast of happenings at SDP, but in the meantime, I’ll continue to keep you posted right here on the blog! All weddings and sessions shot as of today’s date will be fully edited and delivered to clients prior to my vacation. I have two album drafts left to deliver out of my HUGE list this winter – and those will be in clients’ hands by the end of this Sunday! Because a blog post from a photographer is worthless without a photo, here’s another gem from Meghan and Scott’s engagement session last week!

Have a great week and weekend!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a brief studio update – much more to come in a later post, but I did want to pass along to all of my fabulous customers and clients that the fall portrait season IS booked full – October actually booked up before September was fully filled. I have portrait sessions available beginning in mid-November. November can still be a nice month to shoot; so if you’re thinking about Christmas gifts, or holiday card images, there are a small handful of sessions left in November. Also while we are talking about the holidays, I will again be having a print sale starting the day after Thanksgiving. Everything in my online ordering galleries will be 25% off for two weeks, so start planning your orders now!

Also, I think most of you know this but as the only employee of SDP, sometimes things do get a bit crazy during peak shooting season(s), namely mid to late spring and especially the fall. I’m really, really booked full with weddings and portrait sessions right now and this week that we are starting right now is likely the busiest of the year. As such, I sometimes get a bit bogged down with emails and phone calls. Please know that I am returning inquiries and other requests as quickly as I can in between shoots and getting client orders out in a timely fashion, and sometimes (especially as we near the weekend and on wedding days), I get a little behind on responding. Be patient and I will be in touch as quickly as possible. Also, email is the absolute best way to reach me right now. For instance, there are three days this week that I will be out of the office all day; constantly moving from one meeting/shoot to another. Emails are easy for me to respond to early in the morning before I head out (and before anyone is up to receive a return phone call!).

As we head into the latter part of October, my workload should start returning to a bit more “normal” level. πŸ™‚

Have a great week everyone!
