You probably remember Lauren from her family’s session the week before last – here she is again with her fiance Jayme – the EVENING before they moved her to Detroit! (glad the weather was good for us! 🙂 ) Thanks guys for being troupers as I know this is but one thing you had to check off your to-do list before getting out of town! You’ll see them on the blog again a year from now when they are married!

Lua + John | Shawnee Mission Park engagement session

Lua and John were a blast to work with and we got a gorgeous day for their session last week. Shawnee Mission Park remains one of my favorite places to shoot and again it didn’t disappoint – maybe beyond the sudden infestation of ticks in the more lushly vegetated areas of the park. I think we all escaped unscathed after taking a few minutes to brush off our jeans…hey, it’s one of the hazards of the job 🙂 These two have such a fantastically natural connection and it really showed throughout the session. They’ll be getting married before you know it – August – and you’ll see their smiling faces right back here on the blog!

Kristen + Brendan | Kansas City’s West Bottoms engagement session

April 19th, 2011

Wind seemed to follow Kristen and Brendan wherever they went. Wind seemed to follow Kristen and Brendan wherever they went. It’s no secret the weather this spring has been VERY volatile; I’m super nervous about next week as I have FIVE engagement sessions to shoot and know the weather’s not been able to string together more than two good days for weeks. Kristen and Brendan’s first go at their engagement session turned out to be a super warm day; however, the winds were gusting to 40mph which makes it hard to walk at times let alone not look like a tornado is bearing down on you. Our reschedule turned out to be fairly breezy as well; although not THAT breezy it was quite cool! Luckily the sun broke out partway through their session and it ended up being quite pleasant for about the last hour. Kristen had expressed to me a love for textures (old wood, old bricks, worn paint) and a vintage vibe, so I suggested the West Bottoms as a location that would fit that bill. Here’s what we came up with during our two hours of exploring alleys and old building fronts! These two will be back on the blog in October, when they’ll be happily married 🙂

Rebekah and Daniel: engaged | Watkins Mill State Park and Kansas City West Bottoms

It’s not everyday I get to do an engagement session for someone I know. Well, I did here! Rebekah is my cousin – and I was ultra flattered when she asked me to do an engagement session for her and her fiance Daniel. You see, they live in southern California. A veritable hotbed of uber talented big name photographers, and sunny gorgeous shoot sites. But no, Rebekah wanted to shoot near her old stomping grounds while in town visiting her dad (my uncle Robert, who built my fantabulous bridal show booth!) and our grandmother. We decided on a nice mix of some good ol’ Missouri scenery at Watkins Mill State Park, and some good ol’ 100+ year old brick warehouses in the West Bottoms. It wasn’t without glitches – I met them at my grandmother’s house with plenty of time to hit both locations, and their rental car would not start! After that debacle, we were running late enough that we were pressed for daylight once reaching the bottoms – but I improvised with some off camera flash work. After returning them to my grandmother’s house to deal with the car issue, the heavens opened and it stormed, and stormed, at STORMED (many of you will remember this as the night of the insane downpours during Monday Night Football here in KC!) Needless to say, we at least beat THAT and got the session safely done, even if a bit more slowly than anticipated. 🙂 Here are some of the highlights!
