The SDP fall mini sessions have always been insanely popular. So far for fall of 2017, I have three dates set; two in September and one in October. A second October date (perhaps very early November) will be set when my October work schedule becomes available on September 19th, for a total of FOUR sessions; two each in September and October. These dates typically fill up, so reserve your session now. On all days, sessions are scheduled every hour on the hour and last typically 30-40 minutes. The cost is $250.00 ($50.00 deposit required to hold your slot, balance payable at completion of session), and includes the session and a gallery of edited, full-resolution images for your download with print release (typically averaging 50 images, with a number of extra black and white versions thrown in to boot).

The fall 2017 dates are:

Sunday, September 17th – Shawnee Mission Park, Shawnee, KS (a HUGE location offering everything from manicured park-type areas to tall prairie grass, lake, streams, and wooded areas)

Sunday, September 24th – Stocksdale Park, Liberty, Missouri (one of my perennial favorites for shooting in the fall, with gorgeous wooded and open field areas)

Sunday, October 22nd – Scherer Farms, Excelsior Springs, Missouri (a small farm complete with gorgeous red barn, maple trees, rolling hills, board fence and a picturesque pond with cattails)

I am SUPER excited about the new location at Scherer Farms. Clients choosing this location will have one-of a kind images on this barn (see images above of property) – this farm belongs to my sister, so won’t be used by any other photographers making it truly unique for SDP clients! Scherer Farms is about a 20 minute drive northeast of Liberty, Missouri, or 35 minutes northeast of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Complete directions will be provided to clients choosing this location.

Here are some FAQs about my mini sessions:

  1. What if it rains? There will be rain dates for each of these mini session dates. If the rain date does not work for you, I will work with you to get you rescheduled on a date that everyone is available.
  2. What if none of these dates work for me, or I want a location other than the mini session day locations? You are welcome to book on any other date I have available in my calendar, by visiting www.sarahdickerson/acuityscheduling.com – September availability is up, as is the October 22nd mini session date. Other October dates will be released by September 19th, 2017, when my airline work schedule is made available to me.
  3. Are there refunds? Unfortunately, no. Deposits are nonrefundable, though in circumstances such as client illness, we can absolutely reschedule your session. Due to my full time job and the fact it involves 100% travel, I have limited availability for photo sessions and must ensure that the slots I have made myself available for are filled and going to be used. Sessions are not refundable, either, due to the custom nature of the service and end product and the downloadable nature of the files.
  4. What types of sessions can I book for the mini session dates? Almost any type that can be done at the mini session locations! Family sessions are most common, but I have also photographed children, seniors wishing a more brief session, and engaged (and married!) couples also wishing an abbreviated session.
  5. Can I bring my dog? ABSOLUTELY. I welcome pets at my mini sessions!
  6. What time of day are the sessions? Sessions go from early morning (sunrise) up until lunchtime, then break until approximately 3pm and go until sunset. The best light can be found at the very beginning and end of the day, but by breaking midday for 3 hours, we avoid the harsh light when the sun is directly overhead for all sessions.
  7. I want to get in on this, how do I book? Simply visit my booking site at www.sarahdickerson/acuityscheduling.com and follow the directions! You’ll be able to select your date and time slot, and pay your deposit. If you have pre-purchased a session from me this year and hold a coupon code, you can absolutely use them for these sessions – just enter your coupon code and you will be able to book the date and time you wish, without remitting payment.

If you have ANY questions at all about the sessions or the booking process, email me! (phone calls are unfortunately very difficult for me to return when I am on trips, so emails are absolutely the easiest way to get ahold of me as I can return them during off hours. If you do call, please be patient as if I’ve just started a trip it can be a while before I can get back to you!)

I hope to see you at one of my fall session dates, or on another date I have available!

SDP has had a very quiet winter as I settle into my new career. However, Daylight Savings returns tonight, Spring is (mostly!) in the air, and it’s time to think about portrait sessions again! I continue to offer family, senior, engagement, newborn, or any other kind of portrait session on a part-time basis. My schedule is posted each month, by the 19th of the previous month, on my booking page which can be accessed here or by clicking the “availability calendar” link at the top of this page under the “info and pricing” tab.

Right now, I have session availability for this month (March) posted, beginning March 22nd, and continuing through the end of the month. April’s dates will be posted when I receive my April work schedule (no later than March 19th). I do hope to host a mini session day in April; however, this will be dependent upon me getting a good weekend day off next month! (A side note: I should have plenty of session availability in April and May, but June will likely be a very limited month for me due to my annual recurrent training at the airline, which requires a substantial amount of online coursework, study, and preparation.)

And the most important part of this post – I am, for the first time EVER, having a session sale! Book now and save on your session fee, whether a full or mini session! To do so, again, visit the links above to book your session, and instead choose one of the two “gift certificate” options. You will pay now, but can use anytime in 2017! You will receive a code via email that you can redeem for a session and book immediately with the quick link provided, or book later, even this fall! If you have any questions about the sale, which runs through next Friday the 17th, please shoot me an email.

Times, they have a changed – a new direction for SDP

September 2nd, 2016

Hi everyone!

As we gear up for the busiest time of the year for photography (FALL!), I figured I owed an update on the direction SDP is taking and what services the studio will offer going forward.

Last spring, I published a note saying I was no longer accepting weddings due to a career change. Well, that career change is now complete, after a number of months of training, hard work, and being away from home for extended periods of time. I can now proudly say I’ve achieved a lifelong dream and am now employed as an airline pilot.

While this is obviously a drastic career change from that as a full-time photographer, it doesn’t mean I was burnt out or chose to move completely away from my photography business. Quite the contrary! I love shooting just as much as ever, and it’s a great break from my travels. But, you ask, how does being an airline pilot affect my scheduling for photography?

Quite honestly, it affects it drastically. I am away from home for usually 4-5 days at a time. I work many weekends, and I will work many holidays. Obviously, I can’t schedule shoots when I am not even in Kansas City! I also don’t get my work schedule until around the 21st of the month prior, so for instance, October’s schedule will come out around the 21st of September. Although I can try to bid particular dates off, I will not always be successful – especially given that I’m new to the company and everything schedule-wise is seniority based. Meaning I get the leftovers. 🙂

I have set up a new scheduling system that I will hope will streamline the booking process as much as possible. Clients will simply book online, pay their deposit online, submit their portrait agreement, and they are done! My available dates and times will be in the scheduling system. If you don’t see it, it means it’s not available.  I will update the system with my new schedule each month. If you don’t see dates for a particular month yet, again, it means I don’t have that month’s schedule yet, so be patient! I can’t commit to particular dates or times until I have my work schedule.

It also means I can unfortunately no longer accept weddings. The only way for me to guarantee, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I have an exact Saturday off is to take vacation. And although it has been tough giving up the branch of my business that brought me the greatest success, it was something I simply had to choose to give up in order to pursue this dream.

Now, fall 2016. Are you ready? My scheduling system is set up, September dates are in (I may add a couple of additional times during the week; I’m waiting for confirmation on a couple of schedule items!), and I will be releasing locations for the weekend dates, September 17th and 25th, this evening. These shoots on these two dates will all be at the same location so I can cut out driving time and accommodate the most clients in that time block. I hope (*HOPE*) to have another weekend day off in October to fit in even more fall sessions, but at a minimum, I’ll offer weekday evening sessions in October.

Stay tuned, as I said, for another post shortly with details on location for the September 17th and 25th shoots – either this evening or tomorrow morning. They will both be north of the River! I hope to add a south of the river location or two in October if schedule allows.

Again, stay tuned, thanks for your understanding, and blue skies!

xo

A very important announcement – and spring mini sessions!

2016-minis

Hi All!

Well…it’s been a bit quiet this past winter, but it’s because SDP is going through some very large changes! Some, I regret to announce…but, personally, it’s a move I’m excited to make and a dream I’ve always wanted to pursue, and the time is nigh given my age and the changes occurring in the industry I am moving toward. More on this below – but in the meantime, if you’d like a mini session this spring, act fast! Available times are listed below for 4/9, and you can book them by emailing me!

Effective immediately, SDP is no longer accepting wedding bookings. (please note I will be, and am very much looking forward to, shooting the handful of 2016 weddings I have on the books! 2016 brides, you have received an email from me in advance of this posting so you have no worries – I’m excited to work with you!) I am still accepting portrait sessions – however, please note, I have a (extremely limited) set number of April sessions available before 4/22 (see schedule below)…and will not be available for sessions, no exceptions, until a rough August or September timeframe after that point.

I have decided to make a career change and chase a dream since I have been a teenager. I have been a longtime pilot and flight instructor, and accepted my first job as a professional pilot.

With this career change comes significant amounts of training. This training is not conducted in the Kansas City area, and it requires my total, 100% concentration as well as lots of study outside of daily classroom and simulator time.

The above being said, I absolutely, positively cannot accept any work while I am in training (after 4/22). There are no ifs, ands or buts – except for the aforementioned weddings I have booked, which I have accommodated for and will be shooting as scheduled!

After I complete training and am assuming a “normal” flying schedule, I will again begin to accept limited portrait session bookings. Due to my career and subsequent travel/lifestyle change, there will be some changes to my booking requirements, which I’ll detail below and will be addressed in the FAQs on my website(s), as I update them:

1. bookings can only be accepted approximately 30 days in advance, as that is when I know my work/travel schedule for the month. I am in the process of integrating a calendar of availability into my website that will allow clients to book my available days each month, making my month-to-month schedule as simple as possible.

2. weekends may be available, but again, will not be known until 30 days in advance. I will be bidding a work schedule, and what I get is what I get as far as days off for the month; my days in Kansas City are not 100% within my control.

3. mini sessions are ONLY available on mini session dates. I will only have 1 or 2 of these per year (see below for available times this month!). I will have limited time to spend with my husband, dogs, and at home; so limiting my bookings is necessary so I’ve got some down time while I am not working my flying job.

4. full sessions are available any time I am available and in town.

Thank you for your understanding! I have worked very hard to work with clients on schedule over the years, and have even bent my “no mini sessions outside of mini session dates” rule, but with this career change, there will be some dates and times I simply will not be able to accommodate. I have no control over this! I love photography and I have made this career change to chase a life long dream; not because I choose to no longer do portrait or wedding photography! I will miss weddings TREMENDOUSLY and look forward to maintaining relationships with my regular portrait clients once I complete training.

Also – while I am in training, I will be out of town during the week. I will be unable to fulfill orders or answer client emails during these days. I will be in class all day and studying by night. I will address any emails and inquiries over the weekends as I can. Please be patient. I will get back with you. Training is incredibly demanding. It is very important that my concentration is 100% on the task at hand while I am attending class.

Again – THANK YOU to all of my clients over the years; and although SDP is continuing in a greatly reduced capacity, the single most important thing I can address is that SDP IS CONTINUING! I am not closing the business, I am maintaining all of my business licenses, my proofing site, and client files. SDP is simply gearing down from a full-time, heavy-volume studio to a part time vocation for me. I have moved from my studio location given this career change, and will be operating the business 100% out of my home. I do have access to the old studio location, however, on a shoot-by-shoot basis, if it is desired for a particular session, such as for newborns or toddlers.

Thank you so much to everyone, and please stay in touch!

– Sarah

A lot of clients wait until the holidays to place print, canvas, and digital file orders. Well, this is that one time that  your procrastination pays off! From Black Friday and continuing for two weeks, I’m holding my annual 25% off sale. Everything in my online galleries at http://sarahdickersonphotography.zenfolio.com/ is on sale during this time! If you can’t find your galleries, email me. Or, if you have a shoot or wedding prior to 2013 that you’d like to see again in order to place an order, I can put a temporary gallery online for you.

I have some important announcements coming up, but the most important is that I am trimming down SDP quite significantly in 2016. (No, I’m not going away, I’m just stepping back for a while to concentrate on another project – so to my regular family clients I see nearly every year, I’ll still be able to serve you!) Along with this, I’m making this my last official holiday sale. So, to those clients who have always thought of taking advantage and, say, ordering that canvas you really want above your couch, speak now or forever hold your peace! This is IT!

Taking advantage is simple – just enter the code SDPHoliday at checkout anytime from the time the clock strikes midnight on Thanksgiving and turns to Black Friday, up through 11:59pm on Friday, December 11th. Happy Shopping! If you have any questions at all, email me!

Considering I’m in Kansas City, I’ve found myself blessed to be included among the top Topeka wedding photographers for so long. I have Lyn Scardina, Topeka wedding planner, to thank for most of that! I have worked closely with Lyn for years now, and Haley and James’ wedding was a bittersweet one for me, as it was my last time working with Lyn. She’s heading off soon to retirement in the Carolinas. I wish her well!! I still have plenty more Topeka weddings to come, but she has been an absolute blast to work with all this time. Haley and James’ wedding was no different. And I’ve enjoyed working with these two – from their gorgeous engagement session last fall to shooting James’ brother’s wedding (Dan and his lovely bride Jill) – which was also recently featured on my blog!

Considering the incredibly wet spring we have had, these two were lucky to have such a gorgeous sunny day for their early May wedding. Haley looked absolutely stunning (loved her updo/bun!) and these two were having the time of their lives.

Enjoy the photos from their sunny, splendid day!

Funny thing, I shot Dan and Jill’s wedding last January and am still playing blog catch up. I’m currently editing Dan’s brother, James’ wedding (to the lovely Haley!) from earlier this month. So fun to see their family twice for weddings within months of each other! Haley and James will come to the blog shortly; but I am excited to share Dan and Jill’s day! The ceremony at the gorgeous old St. Joseph’s Church in Topeka was followed by outdoor photos on an unseasonably warm day (with a weird rain squall that developed and gave us a very dramatic sky!) at the Kansas Museum of History. We wound up at Heritage Hall for the reception. Enjoy the photos from their day!

Seriously. Who WOULDN’T love these two? Ben and John are so, so sweet and fun – and their wedding day was elegant as I expected it would be, being in the Rooftop Bar at the Intercontinental in Kansas City – but also incredibly fun. Fun to watch, fun to document, fun to be a part of. Everyone there was having fun and you could tell that every single guest adored these two. For me, this wedding was less about artsy portraits and more about pure documentation and telling a story. Below is my version of their wedding story!
